Project Description:

Innovation in the German energy market has steadily received increasing international attention since the introduction of the Renewable Energies Act of 2009. My research focuses on an innovation economics perspective on the effects of creative processes in this market environment – particularly product innovation and business networks – and on studying how their effects are distributed throughout the economy and on the sector as a whole. Of particular interest are 1) the role that small to mid-size utility companies (German: „Stadtwerke“) have to play in achieving the nation's 2050 goals for a low-carbon economy, and 2) the options that policy makers have in setting effective incentives for realizing a socially accepted, financially sustainable compromise in guiding the economy along an ecologically sustainable path. The aim is to provide municipal utilities, as well as to their local and national political stakeholders, with objective, scientific studies based on empirical analysis and agent-based models concerning incentives and their effects on the energy sector.
