Project description:

Starting point of the dissertation is the assumption that the role of patent attorneys in the patenting process has gained little attention so far. Their impact on the patenting performance of firms is insufficiently investigated. Hence, this project analyzes how certain characteristics of patent attorneys affect the patenting performance of firms. Amongst others the research concentrates on the attorneys' experience, their specialization, and on the distance between the attorneys and key actors in firms' innovation value chain. The goal is to guide firms to an IPR management that is more effective and to affect the discussion of patent indicators as valid measures of innovation output.
